At a recent discussion, the leader of the discussion was asking about a number of subjects, including “What is sin?”. Among the replies came one suggestion that sin was human nature. This idea was refuted by the leader of the discussion who suggested that as Jesus was fully human and he did not sin, perhaps in fact, sin is not part of human nature.
This morning’s Bible reading (John 17), where Jesus prays for His disciples, contains as part of the prayer the following (NIV verse 16):
They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.
This seems a fairly clear indication from Jesus that sin is not human nature. I particularly like the wording of the Message translation:
They are no more defined by the world
Than I am defined by the world.
